  1. King of France from 1774, grandson of Louis
  2. XV, and son of Louis the Dauphin. He was
  3. dominated by his queen, Marie Antoinette, and
  4. the finances fell into such confusion that in
  5. 1789 the States General (parliament) had to
  6. be summoned, and the French Revolution began.
  7. Louis lost his personal popularity June 1791,
  8. when he attempted to flee the country (the
  9. Flight to Varennes) and in Aug 1792 the
  10. Parisians stormed the Tuileries palace and
  11. took the royal family prisoner. Deposed Sept
  12. 1792, Louis was tried in Dec, sentenced for
  13. treason Jan 1793, and guillotined.
